One of the many questions I see all over the internet and social media is “Is *blank* movie still happening?”. I see it with Guillermo Del Toro’s Haunted Mansion, Enchanted 2 (tentatively titled Disenchanted), Tinkerbell starring Reese Witherspoon, but the one movie that stands out is Cruella.
In the Summer of 2013 it was announced that Disney Studios was prepping a Cruella De Vil film, with Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) penning the first draft of the script. Two and a half years later in 2016 it was announced that The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone was in talks to star as the classic Disney villain. The film is described as how Cruella become obsessed with fur/puppies in the early years of her life. Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks, Venom) was brought on to pen the next draft of the script. At the end of 2016 Mozart In The Jungle creator Alex Timbers was in talks to direct, Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Maleficent 2) writing the latest draft of the script. It was also announced they were looking to start production in March of 2017.
We are now coming to the end of 2017 and we have heard nothing from the project since. Cruella was shockingly nowhere to be seen or heard from at this years D23 Expo back in July. So what is happening with the project? Emma Stone has since won an Oscar for her performance in La La Land, she finished shooting one movie and has been attached to three new projects set for production next year. Director Alex Timber also has projects lined up in development.
All that being said I have heard that the project has been delayed but Disney is still developing the movie, and have been assurerd that Stone and Timbers are indeed still attached and interested at the movie. It is very likely that Disney will kick off production on Cruella again in the Summer of 2018. So stay tuned for additional announcements on the film in the coming months.
Disney Studios is staying busy in the meantime, in 2018 the studio will bring us A Wrinkle In Time, Christopher Robin, Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Mary Poppins Returns. The studio has 3 films currently in production live action/remakes of Dumbo, Aladdin, Lion King, and the holiday film Nicole All set for release in 2019. Disney will also start on Mulan, The Jungle Cruise, Maleficent 2, Artemis Fowl in 2018.
